Keewaydin Reflections

•  At Keewaydin our study group went on a hike called Generals lookout. We learned about Land use and Impact. Impact means, the effect something has on something else. What I thought was amazing was that in1775-1900 80% of land was farmland and 20% of the land was forest. Now the 1900's to 2008 80% of the land is Forest and 20% of the land is Farmland. The reason why the percentage changed is because in 1775- 1900's the people needed food, crops, and the needed the farming area to have sheep's for sheep farming and didn't need as much forest area. Now the people need more forest and not as much farmland because they can buy food and crops from stores now. I liked this hike because I think learning about Impact and Land use was interesting.

•  I will remember Canoeing the most about Keewaydin, but I will also remember bed time (how cold it was in the morning when we woke up) Generals Lookout, the mosquitoes, the campfire, the play we put on about a stump, The Falls of Lana Hike, and the Hobo cookout

My job was being a hopper for the first half of the week. When you're a hopper you go into the dining hall when the first gong rings. There's a white board and you have to get everything off of the white board and put it on your table. Once you're done setting your table and getting everything ready on your table the gong rings for everyone to come and eat. The people know what table there at because we are holding our table number up so they can find the right table. The hopper is a fun job to do; the only part I don't like is that I have to be ready in the morning before everyone else. You are the hopper for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for half of the week. You clean up your table once eating is over.

The theme of the week at Keewaydin was Community. I learned that a community is a group of living organisms that work together (to survive). A community communicates with each other and works together and agrees on something. I community can go to a town meeting and make decisions for the community. Learning about communities impacted my ideas about communities because first thought a community was just people working together and helping each other. I thought that grown ups could only participate in Town Meeting too. But I was wrong. I found out that kids can go to town meeting and talk about what they think is right for the town. Since we learned more about communities I'm going to help out more often. At Keewaydin we had our own Town meeting and we were talking about putting a hydro- electric dam in Keewaydin Ville, and the community all voted.

•  At Keewaydin I went canoeing and learned how to paddle for my first time! I was a little worried at first because when we were going out in the canoes I was going to go canoeing with a girl and not with a grown up. I was afraid that we were going to go the wrong way and bump into each other. Once we started out canoeing we started out rough and we were going everywhere. I felt good that I was at least trying though. Near the end when we got to the other part of the lake and we stopped and had a snack in our canoes. B and I got better near the end we went FAR! After we got back we had a race and the other team won on the way there, but we won on the way back. I felt very good after I was done because I felt like I accomplished something and I was happy.
